Description
In the Spring, as with most raptors, these dark-morphed male red-tailed hawks will grab a thermal and glide up into the heavens. There can be two or more and they circle ever higher, usually in the noon-day sun. The sun shines through the wings and tail, giving a beautiful outline of the plumage. This particular group appears over my backyard almost every year. Because I am close to the river, Osprey will also sometimes appear and do the same ritual. There are times that two of the raptors will hook talons and spiral down through the sky to see who turns loose first. It is a cool sight to behold.
