Description
There are three main types of flower heads. Those heads that have only ray flowers, as in dandelion. Those that have only disk flowers, as in ageratum and thistles. Then there are those heads that are composed of both disk and ray flowers, with the disk flowers tightly gathered in the "eye", while the enlarged ray flowers have become petals radiating outward from the eye. This Zinnia "eye" is a good example of a composite flower. Some other composite flowers are the chrysanthemum, sunflower, dahlia, aster, cosmos, and Black-eyed Susan.
