An unusual freezing rain storm occurred in the southern Willamette valley in December 2016. As a result there was much damage from falling trees and power lines. The rain came down on the tree limbs, first freezing on the limbs and then creating vertical icicles. The weight of the ice caused the limbs to bend, causing the icicles to lay in a horizontal position. The ends of the icicles then began to curve back to a vertical form.
